Montgomery is the capital of Alabama and it's also the Alabama city with the second largest population (Birmingham is the most populous). Much of Montgomery is associated with the Civil War and was also the capital of the Confederacy in the 1800s. Unlike many other Alabama cities, Montgomery was nearly without damage during the Civil War since Richmond, Virginia was made the Confederate capital before much of the war had taken place. Alabama is also notable for its place in the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a pastor in one of Montgomery's churches and Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. Montgomery is now a major center for commerce in Alabama and is home to many cultural attractions, festivals, and special events.
